Below is some helpful information for shoppers to know about shopping at Smart & Final.
What items are prohibited?
Shoppers cannot deliver gift cards or alcohol* from Smart & Final. Click here to view the full list of prohibited items for all Shipt orders.
If any of these items are on an order, shoppers can kindly let the member know that those items are not eligible for delivery with Shipt. If the member requests more information, shoppers may politely recommend that they reach out to Shipt Support for further details.
*Alcohol delivery certified shoppers can deliver alcohol in all California metros and Phoenix.
Can shoppers use self-checkout at Smart & Final?
No, Smart & Final would like shoppers to use a checkout lane with a store attendant.
Do shoppers need to ask for tax exemption?
Yes. Once shoppers get to check out and tap Check Out in the app, they should let the cashier know the order is tax-exempt and present the barcode to be scanned. If the barcode doesn't scan, the cashier can manually enter the number.
Note: Tax exemption is offered through a program called Smart Advantage, so the cashier may refer to it as a Smart Advantage (or SA) ID.
How are bag fees handled at Smart & Final?
After processing the order, shoppers should take a photo of the receipt and upload it to the app, which will then prompt for the bag fee.
Bag fees are generally found on the store receipt. Shoppers can ask the cashier the bag fee total if it can't be located on the receipt. Enter that total and continue processing the order. If no bags were purchased for the order, shoppers should put the fee total as $0 and finish processing the order.
Will shoppers need to bag items at checkout?
Shoppers will be responsible for bagging items if a store employee is not available to assist.

Can items be returned?
Yes, all items can be returned to the store where they were originally purchased. Smart & Final will accept perishables if they are returned immediately.
Note: Smart & Final has the right to accept or refuse returns for any items.
To complete a return for a Smart & Final order:
- Present the original receipt and your Shipt card at Customer Support.
- Write the order number on the receipt and take a picture of it after the store attendant has completed the return
- Email the picture to support@shipt.com
