Preventing Item Contamination and Spoilage

How can I avoid contaminating items?

One component of member satisfaction is receiving items that have not been contaminated and are safe for consumption.

Top shopper tips:

  • Wiping off the shopping cart handle prior to use to avoid germs and bacteria
  • Keeping hand sanitizer on-hand to use after completing each order
  • Bagging raw meat and poultry separately from each other and other items
  • Separating food items potentially toxic items such as household cleaning items
  • Refraining from touching live animals while shopping and/or delivering an order, which may contaminate items and potentially cause members to have allergic reactions
Note: If you do come into contact with an animal while shopping or delivering, please be sure to wash your hands or use hand sanitizer immediately after to avoid contaminating items

How can I keep cold items from thawing and potentially spoiling before delivery?

Providing hot and cold items at their proper temperatures is an important part of providing a positive member experience — keeping food items bagged well and at their ideal temperatures helps prevent spoilage and harmful bacteria from growing and multiplying.

Top shopper tips:

  • Shopping for non-perishable items first (typically the inner aisles of the store)
  • Keeping your cart separated by items of different temperatures to prevent thawing
  • Placing temperature-sensitive items in insulated cooler bags in the store as you shop and in your car as you deliver — plus when a member sees that you used insulated bags, it helps build their confidence in your service and can lead to higher ratings and tips!
