Shopping at Costco

Below is some helpful information for shoppers to know about shopping at Costco!



Is membership required to shop Costco orders?

Previously, shoppers were provided with a physical Costco membership card for entry into the store.

Shoppers will now be provided with a digital Costco membership card in the app, which they will present to the store associate when entering the store. To pull up the digital membership card for store entry, tap “Membership Card” on the Order Detail screen of a Costco order.
*Note: If you were previously using a physical membership card, that card is no longer valid and may be discarded.

During the checkout process, the app will automatically bring up the digital membership card again with a barcode for an associate to scan.

         



Do shoppers need to ask for tax exemption?

Yes. Shoppers should request tax exemption before the attendant begins scanning the items. Shoppers will also need to sign the resale form before leaving the store.



Can shoppers use self-checkout?

No. Shoppers should only check out through lanes with a store attendant.



What items are prohibited?

Shoppers cannot deliver alcohol*, tobacco, tires, prescription/behind-the-counter medication, OTCs containing dextromethorphan (DXM), gift cards, guns, ammunition, fireworks, movie tickets, and food court items from Costco.

If any of these items are on an order, shoppers can kindly let the member know that those items are not eligible for delivery with Shipt. If the member requests more information, shoppers may politely recommend that they reach out to Shipt Support for further details.
*Note: Alcohol is not permitted to be added to any order as a special request even if shoppers are alcohol certified.



Is shopping at Costco different from shopping at other stores?

Costco is a warehouse store where items are typically purchased in bulk. Shopping and delivering bulk/wholesale orders is different from other orders — these orders do not always supply bagging, are often heavy, and can take up a significant amount of space in your vehicle. Can members order general merchandise items like clothing or TVs?

Most general merchandise items are not in the Shipt catalog, but members can request those items via special requests.

Should shoppers use a rewards card or coupons at checkout?

No, shoppers should not use a rewards card at checkout.



Will shoppers need to bag items at checkout?

Costco does not offer bags at checkout. Shoppers will need to ask for boxes to pack the order in if needed. 



Can items be returned?

Yes, all items, except for perishables, can be returned to the store where they were originally purchased.
*Note: Costco has the right to accept or refuse returns for any items.

To complete a return for a Costco order:

  • Present the original receipt and your Shipt card at Customer Support. 
  • Write the order number on the receipt and take a picture of it after the store attendant has completed the return.
  • Email the picture to support@shipt.com.


What should I do if a member has an issue with a Costco order?
